Safety / Weather

Before Fueling

  1. Make sure vessel is secured to the fueling dock. Fuel before dark if possible.
  2. Stop all engines, motors, fans and all electrical equipment that can produce a spark. Open the master switch if the electrical system has one. Put out all galley fires, open fires, and open flames.
  3. Shut off blowers.
  4. Close all ports, doors, windows and hatches so that fumes cannot blow aboard and below.
  5. Disembark all passengers and any crew members not needed for the fueling operation.
  6. Prohibit all smoking aboard and nearby.
  7. Have a checked fire extinguisher close at hand.
  8. Measure the fuel in the tanks, and do not order more than the tank will hold; allow 5% for expansion.

While Fueling

  1. Be sure inboard tanks are grounded, and keep nozzle in contact with can or filter pipe to guard against static sparks.
  2. For outboards, remove portable tanks from boat, and fill on shore.

After Fueling

  1. Close/cover fill opening.
  2. Wipe up any spilled gasoline. Leave wipe up rags at dock or in air tight container.
  3. Open all ports, windows, doors and hatches; turn on bilge blower. Ventilate boat at least 5 minutes prior to starting engine(s).
  4. Sniff low down in bilge and engine compartment. If any order of gasoline is present, do not start engine; continue ventilation actions until odor can no longer be detected. Check for any drips and liquid fuel.
  5. Leave fuel dock immediately after transactions are completed.
